Reading ALT 1

I can demonstrate comprehension of key ideas and details of grade-level literary and informational texts.

AST 1.1 - Inferences and Analysis of Text  :  I can find evidence to support inferences and analysis of a text with guidance.

AST 1.2 - Main Idea-Theme-Summarize  :  I can provide the main idea or theme of a text and summarize the key details.

Reading ALT 2

I can analyze an author’s craft and structure.

AST 2.1 - Meaning of Words  :  I can determine the meaning of words and phrases and analyze how specific words impact meaning and tone.

AST 2.2 - Developing the Main Idea  :  I can analyze how a sentence, chapter, scene, or section fits into the text and helps develop the main idea, theme, setting, or plot.

Reading ALT 3

Writes argument texts.

AST 1.1 - Lead  :  The writer wrote an introduction to interest readers and make sure the introduction would fit with the whole.

AST 1.2 - Transitions  :  The writer used transitions to help readers understand how different parts fit together.

AST 1.3 - Ending  :  The writer restated the important points to strengthen the overall argument and offered a final insight.

AST 1.4 - Organization  :  The writer organized the argument into sections purposefully leading readers from one claim or reason to another.

AST 1.5 - Elaboration  :  The writer included and arranged a variety of evidence and used trusted sources and information from experts.

AST 1.6 - Craft  :  The writer chose words carefully to support the argument for effect (made piece sound serious).

AST 1.7 - Spelling  :  The writer used resources to be sure the words are spelled correctly.

AST 1.8 - Punctuation and Sentence Structure  :  The writer used punctuation to help include or connect information.

Writing ALT 2 - Information

Writes information texts.

AST 2.1 - Lead  :  The writer wrote an introduction to interest readers with a quote or significant fact.

AST 2.2 - Transitions  :  The writer used transitions to help readers understand how different parts fit together.

AST 2.3 - Ending  :  The writer wrote a conclusion that restated the important ideas and offered a final insight.

AST 2.4 - Organization  :  The writer chose a focused subject, used subheadings to separate sections, and made deliberate choices on how to order sections.

AST 2.5 - Elaboration  :  The writer included varied kinds of information, used trusted sources and information from authorities on the topic, and worked to make the information understandable and interesting.

AST 2.6 - Craft  :  The writer chose words carefully to explain the information and ideas and to have an effect on the reader using a teaching tone and formal style.

AST 2.7 - Spelling  :  The writer used resources to be sure the words are spelled correctly including technical vocabulary.

Writing ALT 3 - Narrative

Writes narrative texts.

AST 3.1 - Lead  :  The writer wrote a beginning that set the plot/story in motion and hinted at the larger meaning of the story.

AST 3.2 - Transitions  :  The writer used transitional phrases and clauses to signal changes.

AST 3.3 - Ending  :  The writer wrote an ending that connected to what the story is really about.

AST 3.4 - Organization  :  The writer used paragraphs purposefully and created a logical, clear sequence of events.

AST 3.5 - Elaboration  :  The writer developed realistic characters, details, action, dialogue and internal thinking that contribute to the deeper meaning of the story.

AST 3.6 - Craft  :  The writer developed some relationship between characters to show why they act and speak as they do (internal and external story).

AST 3.7 - Spelling  :  The writer used resources to be sure the words are spelled correctly.

AST 3.8 - Punctuation and Sentence Structure  :  The writer used punctuation to include extra detail and explanation in some sentences.
