Beaver Days
Virtual 2024-25
Welcome Back Video
We are so excited to welcome you to the 2024-25 school year! Due to construction, we will not be hosting our typical Beaver Days in person on the BHS campus. Some activities are now online and some have been rescheduled for the start of the school year. There is one in-person opportunity you won't want to miss: Meet with your counselor on August 15th at ACMA (Arts and Communication Magnet Academy) if you have questions about your schedule or need additional resources to start the school year. You can see who your counselors are below.
Next year will be exciting as we continue to build a strong community and maintain our traditions while our brand new high school is being built right next to us! On this page, you will find all of the information you need to help you start the school year off strong.
Because the typical Beaver Days activities are spread out over time instead of being grouped into a 2-hour time slot, we've provided an activity calendar at the end of this page to help you keep track. Here's a list of what's new in 2024-25 and each item is explained further in a following section.
- Welcome new Assistant Principal Raquel Morán Huerta who is replacing Teresa Sanchez!
- Counseling reorganization means new counselors for some students
- Start/end times for the school day shifted one hour later
- New phone policy for students
- Changes to walking paths, parking for students, and more due to construction
- Student breakfast and lunch are free for all students.
- All current school volunteers must register again in the new volunteer online system.
- Free BHS t-shirts will be given to freshmen only beginning this year.
There are other features of Beaver Days that are not new that we'd like to share. Check out the sections on Online Verification of Enrollment, ParentSquare, ParentVUE/StudentVUE, Canvas, Chromebook checkout/repair, student pictures, student I.D. cards, fee payment, school clubs, and community partnerships. Contact information for BHS athletics and performing arts is also provided.

Students at BHS are assigned to a counselor alphabetically by last name except for students who are in the BHS Newcomer or AVID programs. Please note that the student assignments by alphabet have shifted slightly. Our counselors are an amazing group of people who are here to support students. Class schedules for the 2024-25 school year will be released on the evening of August 14th. Our counseling team will host office hours on August 15th from 8:00-3:30 at ACMA (Arts and Communication Magnet Academy) for students to enroll, seek support, and review schedules. Attendance is optional. ACMA's address is 11375 SW Center St, Beaverton, OR 97005.
Beaverton High School runs on an A/B schedule. On A days, students will attend periods 1, 3, 5, and 7. On B days, students will attend periods, 2, 4, 6, and Beaver Lodge, which is an advisory class that every student takes during their time at BHS. Students lunches are determined by their 5th and 6th period class. For example, if a teacher in a 5th period class has second lunch, all of the students in that class will have second lunch also.
Monday, August 26th: First day of school for FRESHMEN ONLY.
Tuesday, August 27th: First day of school for sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Second day of school for freshmen.
For the 2024-25 school year, Beaverton School District will be joining other high schools to implement a no phone policy during instructional time. At Beaverton, we believe that
- A clear and consistent set of expectations and interventions are better for both students and staff.
- Phones in the classroom can be more than just an obstacle to learning, they can completely interrupt the learning process.
- We have a role and obligation to help our students learn the appropriate and responsible use of cell phones.
Please see the chart below that outlines the policy. If phones are out in the classroom during class time or in the hallway during class time, they will be confiscated for the remainder of the school day. Additional information will be shared as we get closer to the first day of school.
When you come to campus in August you'll notice some major infrastructure changes right away. These changes will remain in place until the end of the construction phase in 2026.
- The former main parking lot is now part of the fenced-in construction site
- A string of connected 8' wide shipping containers will be installed where the sidewalk used to be from Erickson Avenue to a point across from the Student Center. This "tunnel" will be equipped with electric lights, security cameras, and the end doors will be locked outside of school hours. There will be alternative routes for students who are unable to use the tunnel.
- Parking spaces for campus visitors will be located behind the cafeteria. The entrance to the lot is at 2nd and Stott.
- All parking lots on campus are now designated as staff or visitors only. Students will have to park on the street or find other ways to commute to school. Read on for more about student parking.
- The tennis courts and the practice field next to the football stadium have been reutilized for contractor parking only. During construction, we will have hundreds of workers and we want to prioritize street parking for students.
- The stairs and ramp to the auditorium doors were rebuilt outside of the construction area.
Student Parking and Alternatives to Driving
We lost more parking lot space than anticipated over the summer. Visitors and staff will park in remaining lots. Contractors will have two designated lots created over the summer. Teachers and contractors are expected to park in their assigned lots to allow for more space on the street for student drivers.
There is no street parking to the north of campus, limited parking to the west, and streets to the east have time limits of 1-2 hours, set by the City of Beaverton. Most student drivers will find space on residential roads south of campus.
Things to discuss with your student driver:
- registering their vehicle to allow for quick owner identification, parking passes will not be used this year
- adding in walking time from their vehicle to an unlocked entrance in order to get to class on time
- respecting property they park in front of -- no littering, excessive loud music or yelling, revving of engines, or trampling of plants.
- carpooling with other students (due to privacy laws, BHS is unable to provide names or addresses of students living nearby your home)
Alternate ways to get to school:
- Walking -- invest in weatherproof clothing & backpack or walk as a group with other students
- Wheeled transport -- skateboards, scooters, or bikes. We have a limited number of skateboard lockers available. Scooters and bikes would need to be locked up outside. We do not have lockable space inside a school building to store e-wheels during the school day.
- School bus -- if you live outside the walking zone, consider a school bus. There's a section on Transportation in the Online Verification of Enrollment process to request a bus ride to and/or from school.
- Tri-Met bus -- Tri-met offers free student passes for the year. See the counseling secretary after school begins.
If you have any questions or comments on our parking situation, please contact Assistant Principal Steve Sanderson (steven_sanderson@beaverton.k12.or.us). This is going to be a rough couple of years parking-wise and we can make it work if we work together!
All students in the district are now eligible to receive one free breakfast and one free lunch at school daily. Research indicates that universal free meals improve student health and attendance. Families do not have to apply for meal benefits.
In the past, families applied for student fee waivers/discounts on the same application used for free and reduced meal eligibility. Because families will no longer need to apply for meal benefits, the process for student fee waivers/discounts is changing. To apply for a student fee waiver/discount for the 2024-2025 school year, please complete the application for free/discounted student fees as part of the Online Verification process.
Student meals include an entree, sides and a milk. Students must take the entire meal to be eligible for the no-cost option; this is a federal requirement. The district will continue to charge for à la carte items such as milk, second entrees and snack items.
If there is a negative balance on your student's meal account, please pay the debt as soon as possible. If there is a positive balance on their meal account, you may leave it as is or apply for a refund (Meal Pricing, Payments and Refunds).
(To all previously BSD-approved volunteers: as of mid-June 2024, you are no longer approved and may not volunteer until you have registered and been re-approved with Raptor, the new volunteer management database. Click the link below to register.)
The Beaverton School District's top priority is the safety and well-being of its students and staff. To improve that safety, they've replaced the MyImpact platform with a volunteer management system called Raptor.
All volunteers must reapply through Raptor and consent to an Oregon criminal records check. Please do this as soon as possible. The district needs the entire summer to process thousands of applications and background checks.
- To begin, go to the Volunteer webpage on the district website. A Redirect Notice may pop up. If so, click on the link.
- If needed, translate the page by clicking the language box at the top of the screen and selecting the language of your choice.
- In the Volunteer Application Process section, click on the text in blue (mandatory volunteer training - English; voluntarios - Español).
- Review the training information (about 5 minutes).
- Go back to the Volunteer webpage and click on the yellow box to complete the volunteer application.
- When you electronically sign and submit the application, you are also:
- attesting that you have reviewed the training information
- agreeing to a background check.
Look for an email from the district that your application was received. You will also receive a confirmation email when your application is approved. If you intend to volunteer before school starts, please apply as soon as possible. We look forward to seeing you at Beaverton High School!
Traditionally during Beaver Days, we hand out free t-shirts to the student body specific to grade level and graduating year. This is paid for by the BHS Success Fund. Since the pandemic, parents and staff have noticed that fewer students are taking the shirts and even fewer are wearing them once they have them. This is supported by our supplier who notes a decrease in the number of their customers who order t-shirts.
Only incoming Freshmen and students in the Newcomer program will be given shirts. This is more in line with what other schools do and will free up funds for the BHS Success Fund to reallocate. Shirts will be distributed to Freshmen on their first day of school. Newcomers and freshmen who arrive after the first day of school will be supplied with shirts via Beaver Lodge.
The Communication and Community Involvement (CCI) Department of the Beaverton School District has some good back-to-school information on their district website. The Need-To-Know Checklists in the middle of the page show a list of forms that are included in the Verification of Enrollment process, as well as helpful links for using ParentVue. The last section of the page shows applications that are useful to BSD families, including most of the apps mentioned in this Beaver Days Guide.
Information specific to BHS Families:
- BHS does not have a specific school supply list like you see with primary schools. For the first couple of days, a backpack, inexpensive reusable water bottle, pen, pencil with an eraser, and an inexpensive notebook will be enough. Students will learn what else they need from their teacher during the first class of each course they are taking.
- To get a locker, a student: (a) decides where they'd like their locker to be, for example, by the band room, near the front of the building, Science hall, etc. (b) visits the main office before or after school or during lunch and fills out a Locker Request form. (c) Returns in 2-3 days to pick up the number and combination of their assigned locker.
- BHS-themed clothing & other items will be available to purchase at the Pond (student store) to the left at the top of the stairs in the cafeteria. Open during lunches. They may not have stock until later in the fall so please be patient.
ParentSquare is a communications program used by Beaverton High School to send mass email. BHS uses ParentSquare regularly to send messages to BHS families, students, or staff, and sometimes all three at once! We do our best to make our email clear, concise, and timely, and here's what you can do to receive our messages in the same way:
Download the app on your mobile device.
If you are more comfortable reading & writing in a different language, set your preference to automatically translate to the language you prefer.
Visit the district's Parent Square FAQ to learn more. Great information here with language tabs at the top to make translation easier.
School pictures will take place on September 11th and 12th during Language Arts classes. Students will receive their I.D. cards before they go back to class. We'll let families know which day their student(s) will have their photo taken shortly after school starts.
Thanks to the Beaverton High School Success Fund, every student who goes to Beaverton High School can attend all Metro League games for free by showing their student I.D. card with the printed ASB logo, which used to be an ASB sticker, on the back.
All BHS Students have the opportunity to check out a district-owned Chromebook for use at school and at home. There will be opportunities for students to check out a Chromebook or have a nonworking device replaced in the days right before school starts -- see the Beaver Days Activities calendar at the end of this page for specific dates and times.
We strongly suggest you read about Using a BSD Issued Device and the Damage and Loss Protection Coverage, including questions. (Keep in mind you can translate the text with the language box at the top of any district website.)
Chromebook Insurance
BSD provides Damage and Loss Protection Coverage, also referred to as Chromebook insurance, to protect families financially if a student's Chromebook or accessory is accidentally damaged, lost or stolen. If a Chromebook needs to be replaced, the family is responsible for the replacement cost ($450 or more) unless they have Chromebook insurance ($20 per Chromebook; only the first occurrence protected).
The $20 fee may be reduced or waived for families depending on household income. Because meals are free this year, the meal benefits form to determine eligibility for free or reduced meals is no longer used. Instead, use the new form "Application for Free/Discounted District Fees" that is included in the Online Verification of Enrollment process. Note that you must submit Online Verification with the form completed before a discount or waiver will appear in the Online Payment System.
Additional Chromebook Information
Does your student use their own laptop instead of a BSD-owned Chromebook? Make sure you indicate that when the question appears in the Online Verification process -- there is no longer a separate form to fill out. For more information on student devices, such as Internet Safety and Responsible Use of Technology in School, visit the district page Student Device Resources.
Waiver/Discount on Fees
In the past, families applied for fee waivers/discounts on the same application used for free and reduced meal eligibility. Since families will no longer need to apply for meal benefits, the process for student fee waivers/discounts is changing.
To apply for a fee waiver/discount for the 2024-2025 school year, please complete the application for free/discounted fees as part of the Online Verification process opening on Monday, July 29. The form should take less than a minute to complete. Note that you must submit Online Verification with the form completed before a discount or waiver will appear in the Online Payment system.
ParentVUE and StudentVUE- ParentVUE is a web portal that allows parents and guardians access to near real-time information on attendance, class schedules, class websites, course history, grades, report cards and more. StudentVUE allows students access to the same information. ParentVUE is also used on an annual basis during the start of each school year to verify student enrollment information. To create a ParentVUE account or get help accessing an existing account, click here for directions.
Canvas- The Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) is used by many middle and high school teachers as an extension to in-class instruction. Teachers using Canvas can post assignments, give feedback, and communicate with students. Parents can sign up to have parent access to student's Canvas pages. This allows parents to have real time information about work that is completed or not completed in each class. Click here for directions on how to sign up for a parent account.

BHS Clubs
Beaverton High Schools offers affinity groups, clubs, community partnerships, club sports, and honors societies. There is no shortage of ways to get involved. And if you and some friends want to start a new club, you can!
We will have a club fair in the fall so you can learn about all of the things BHS has to offer. Teacher Jason Sarmiento is our Activities Director and you can always reach out to him to learn more about starting or joining a club. You can also find club information here.
(To all previously BSD-approved volunteers: as of mid-June 2024, you are no longer approved and may not volunteer until you have registered and been re-approved with Raptor, the new volunteer management database. Click the link below to register.)
Volunteer Opportunities at BHS
Donate your time, your compassion, your expertise. At BHS, district-approved volunteers may chaperone field trips, be a timekeeper/line judge/etc. for athletic events, organize/deliver donated food to BHS families in need, work at booths/activities during school events, help prepare/serve a holiday meal to staff, hold an office/plan a project/coordinate volunteers for the BHS Booster Club, and SO MUCH MORE. BHS always needs volunteers. Watch for messages from ParentSquare or Raptor (replaces Better Impact) with sign-ups for volunteering.
Click here to become a Beaverton School District Volunteer
Beaverton High School Booster Club (BHSBC)
The BHS Booster Club operates on a larger scale by supporting student & staff wellness, managing concessions (food & drink) at games, running special events like the annual holiday bazaar and signing up/coordinating volunteer needs for smaller scale events . Are you ready for a bit more responsibility, by yourself or with a partner? Come to monthly BHSBC meetings and see what appeals to you. The BHSBC always needs volunteers. Watch ParentSquare and Principal Kearl's Friday newsletters for a meeting schedule. Contact Amy Flaxel, BHSBC President for 2024-25 (president@beavertonhighbooster.com) for more information.
Beaverton High School Success Fund (BHSSF)
The BHS Success Fund works to make a positive, meaningful impact on the lives of all BHS students by fostering greater opportunities to learn, explore, discover and succeed. The Success Fund works to remove barriers by paying all ASB student participation fees (in full for all students), for most field trips, and for the majority of athletic, performing arts, and classroom fees. Discover other BHS programs wholly or partially supported by the fund by browsing their website.
Student-Based Health Center - Beaverton High School is fortunate to share campus space with a branch of the Virginia Garcia Student-Based Health Center (SBHC). This relationship will continue into the new building. The clinic offers immunizations, athletic physicals, mental health services, and more. The clinic is located west of the main building in the white, one-story annex building that also contains fine arts and engineering classes. Due to construction, the clinic parking lot is filled with portable classrooms, and visitors must park on the street.
BHS Community Partnership - A group of people from faith-based organizations, nonprofits, cultural groups, parent organizations, service groups, businesses, and district staff that partner with BHS administrators, social workers, and community liaisons to provide goods & services, educational opportunities, volunteers, and more to BHS families. Our community partners are instrumental in providing and delivering food to BHS families dependent on school meals to tide them over Thanksgiving and Spring Breaks.
Chicas - Chicas is the youth development program of Adelante Mujeres, a nonprofit organization based in Forest Grove. Chicas provides Latine youth with the tools to believe in their academic and social-emotional potential.
REAP - REAP is a career leadership program focused on entrepreneurial education and innovation. This Portland-based organization is open to students who represent our most marginalized student populations.
CAIRO - CAIRO (Center for African Immigrants and Refugees Organization) is a Portland-founded nonprofit formed to advocate for and act to increase equity and social justice to allow for African refugees and immigrant youth to thrive.
